Dear Member

The Coalition Government under David Cameron's leadership is now well into its second year. The economic picture outside the United Kingdom has deteriorated particularly in Greece and Italy which is having a knock-on effect on the UK economy. The Euro-sceptics among us are pleased that the decision to stay out of the Eurozone was the right one, and sterling is holding up well considering the circumstances. In recent weeks the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne has been active at various international summit meetings proffering advice to Eurozone members which according to the media was not always welcomed or appreciated. This week the Chancellor announced a number of measures he hopes will stimulate the UK economy sufficiently to stave off a double-dip recession. Time will tell if his plans prove succesfull. These are difficult and challenging times which are severely testing our resolve and strength.

It is encouraging that David Cameron has been highly vocal regarding his determination to re-negotiate the terms of the UK's membership of the EC and, specifically he wants to reduce their influence on UK employment and immigratiorin policies, for example. He is also adamant that the UK will not contribute financially to bail out the Eurozone if and when, as seems widely predicted Italy and possibly Spain request financial assistance. Let us all hope that we have the people in government who are sufficiently experienced, and sage enough to steer us through these uncharted waters to better times.

The Conservative Party is always seeking to increase its membership while locally the Chipping Norton Branch is also looking for new committee members who can bring in fresh ideas. If you are not already a member of the Conservative Party or of our enthusiastic and progressive committee please contact Ciceiy Maunder our Branch Chair man on 01608 643680 for an informal discusion and details.

Forthcoming events in 2012 include a presentation by the renowned fine art expert Philip Mould and a cheese and wine tasting with Alex James and Roger Crudge. Details and dates of these events will be announced early in the New Year.

May we take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year.
